The International Gorilla Conservation Project, a non-governmental organization, in collaboration with Kisoro District, has launched the Vanishing Treasures Inception Program aimed at conserving rare animal species and the environment.

With funding from the Luxembourg Government, the shs 760 million program focuses on fostering agroforestry and tree planting, proper waste management and disposal, domestic energy saving through cook stoves, and promoting mindset change. The program will be implemented in 13 villages from Muramba and Nyarusiza sub-counties, which border Mgahinga National Park.

Launching the program on Friday at Mgahinga Triangle Hotel in Nyarusiza Sub County, Kisoro District Chairman Abel Bizimana decried the increasing poverty, malnutrition, and poor health services in the district.

Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner Robert Tukamuhebwa called on the public to embrace tree planting to mitigate the increasing disasters resulting from heavy downpours.
