Fatal Accident Involving Sino Truck Trailer Claims One Life in Rubanda District

One person died on the spot in a tragic accident involving a Sino truck trailer at Hamurwa cell, Hamurwa Town Council along the Kabale-Kisoro road in Rubanda district.

The deceased has been identified as 72-year-old Thomas Bukuru, a resident of Hamurwa cell, Hamurwa Town Council in Rubanda district.

The incident reportedly occurred when a Sino truck with registration number RAF 5291/ RL 3794, traveling from Kisoro to Kabale, met a speeding motorcycle coming from the opposite direction on the same lane. This lane had been partially left due to the collapse of the road at that spot.

According to Elly Maate, the spokesperson for Kigezi police, the trailer driver attempted to avoid a head-on collision with the motorcycle. Unfortunately, in doing so, the truck hit a large stone that had been placed by UNRA (Uganda National Roads Authority) as a barrier. Tragically, the stone rolled off the road and struck the pedestrian, resulting in his immediate death.

The incident took place on September 24, 2023, at approximately 11:30 pm. Police are currently searching for the driver of the Sino truck, who remains unidentified and is believed to be on the run.

Preliminary investigations suggest that both the Sino truck driver and the motorcycle rider, who is also at large, were overspeeding at the time of the accident.

Subsequently, the trailer was towed and is currently parked at Rubanda police station pending an inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).
